Things to Remember:

DistrictWPBasicSetUp.png
  • When designing your web page, you must remember that this is not for publishing or printing. You can't make it as "pretty" as you might other printable pages.
  • Websites need to be kept simple or basic due to the fact that any and all computers must be able to see and read the page.

Text

  • Use a basic font or the default font to keep things simple and consistent.
  • Use colored text sparingly. It often signifies a link and you don't want to confuse the reader.
  • Links will be in color and underlined. Therefore, don't underline other text which is not a link. If you want to call attention to something, make it bold.
  • If you want to create some "fancy" text, for a title for example, do it in another application and take a screen shot of it. Once it is a "picture", it can be added to your page.
  • Here is a step sheet on creating "fancy" text Headings or Banners as shown in the example.

Pictures

  • People will look at pictures before words. It is often good to use pictures as your links.
  • Naming pictures:
    • Pictures must be named uniquely. All pictures live in the same folder. If you name a picture with the same name as someone else, your picture will replace the picture that was originally in the folder and therefore replace the picture on the page that had the original picture.
    • Naming suggestion: initials_name of picture_size of picture (Example: lst_backtoschool_100.jpg)
    • Never use a slash when naming a picture. A slash means a new folder on the server and if that "folder" doesn't exist, you will get an error.
    • Do not use spaces or periods either. Spaces are not web site friendly and there should only ever be one period in the name of something and that comes right before the extension.
  • Collect pictures in advance and save in a folder for ease of use.
  • Resize pictures in advance so that they fit properly in the window area.
  • Here is a step sheet for resizing and adding pictures to your web page.
